Q.
Based on the attention being paid to Myeloperoxidase (MPO) at this time it would seem that the enzyme has only been recently discovered. What is the history of this unique enzyme?
A.
Graham in 1920 first reported a Peroxidase activity observed from neutrophil cytoplasmic granules during phagocytosis. Further work by other labs called this protein by names such as leukin and phagocytin and resulted during the 1950s that there were granule components released during phagocytosis that were toxic to the ingested organisms. SJ Klebanoff was one of the first in 1968 to describe this antibacterial effect as "Myeloperoxidase-Halide-Hydrogen Peroxide Antibacterial System". It has only been in the last ten years that the role of Myeloperoxidase in the cardiovascular diseases has been studied. |
